Jonathan Roy – February 20, 2017 – Fox Cabaret, Vancouver, BC
What a fantastic, fun, intimate evening with Jonathan Roy. So much history comes with this amazing artist. Not only is he the some of the famous NHL goalie, Patrick Roy but he also works closely with Canada’s teen heart-throb of the 80’s, Mr. Corey Hart. It was this past December that a song popped into my music feed. A Christmas song by Jonathan Roy but featuring Corey Hart. Well I was pretty excited to hear something new from Corey but when I listened to “Driving Home For Christmas’, this voice just drew me in. Who was Jonathan Roy? Where did he come from? I was so intrigued and had to find more music by him. Soon after, Mr. Optimist Blues was released by Jonathan and the whole album is truly incredible. I listened to it over and over. Then a few weeks ago I found out that Jonathan was coming to Vancouver to do a show. Well I knew I just had to be there.
It was a magical night. The Fox Cabaret was the perfect venue for his show. Jonathan was accompanied by Greg Keyes on guitar and Cauldin Nash on keyboards. It was a raw, unplugged, stripped down, story-telling kind of show. My favorite. Jonathan told very personal stories of his hockey days, about his Mom being sick and his sister helping her to recovery and how his relationship came about with Corey Hart. All of which were very inspiring. His songs are very personal, like “Fly” which is about his sister and “Good Things” an emotional song about depression. (you have to watch the video). But also the upbeat songs like “New Shoes”, “Daniella Denmark” and “Mr. Optimist Blues” will get you dancing on your feet. After the show, Jonathan took the time to meet with everyone just to chat, take some selfies and sign some CDs. He is such a humble, beautiful person. I am so fortunate to have been able to see him live and meet and talk with him. I look forward to following Jonathan Roy through his journey. I highly recommend you check him out on his website
